Hey moms! Struggling to fall asleep?
If you’re a weary parent of young ones, a good night’s sleep can feel as elusive as the horizon. Yup. I hear you. You’re so tired but for some reason, instead of falling asleep, you become catatonic but just can’t turn your mind off. Because real talk, we just have so many things to think about!
So! When counting sheep fails, essential oils might be the sleep aid you’ve been searching for. Luckily, these essential oils can come to the rescue. Their potent aromas can work wonders, helping you drift off into dreamland.
The scent of essential oils can fill the room like a tropical breeze, working wonders with their complex aroma molecules. If you’re a Tita like me, these associated smells and feelings surge into our unconscious, remembering when our own moms used to massage us to sleep. It signals our mind and body to relax into that sweet, sweet sleep. Also, these essential oils offer a natural alternative to over-the-counter sleeping pills, which can cause dependency. It makes them a safer alternative to medications for promoting relaxation, reducing insomnia and improving sleep—without the risk of dependency that can develop with overuse of sleeping pills.
Here are my favorite essential oil blends for better sleep:
Lavender
Lavender is the star essential oil for sleep. It’s the queen of essential oils because it promotes relaxation and reduces stress. With its floral scent that calls to mind purple hillsides and calm evenings, lavender is an aromatherapy superpower. Simply add a few drops to your diffuser or pillow before bed for an effective lavender sleep ritual. Or, you can also mix 2-3 drops with a carrier oil and rub on wrists, temples, and the soles of feet before bed. When combined with other oils, lavender enhances their effects. Zzzzz.
Chamomile
If you’re also into teas, then you know Chamomile is good away to wind down your night. but apart from tea, Chamomile also has an impressive resume for essential oil sleep cures. The apple blossom aroma evokes images of serene fields and forests that can send you off to dreamland. Rub a couple drops into your temples and the bottoms of your feet right before hitting the hay. If you have Roman chamomile, you can also mix it with lavender. Add 2 drops of lavender in a diffuser or carrier oil together with chamomile for balancing sleep aid blend rich in anxiety-relieving terpenes. Smelling this blend before bed promotes quality sleep.
Peppermint
Peppermint’s fresh, cooling scent has a tendency to wake me up. but together with lavender and marjoram, it stimulates our parasympathetic nervous system to induce feelings of calm and relaxation. If you use 2 drops with lavender in a diffuser, or combine 2 drops peppermint with 2 drops lavender and 1 drop marjoram in a carrier oil for topical application, it results in a warm and soothing smell. Despite being minty, this blend can help lull you to sleep.
Eucalyptus and Sandalwood
Plant extracts like eucalyptus clear the mind and lower elevated stress hormones, if you mix it with woody sandalwood, it creates feelings of peace and calmness. This is because the essential oil from the eucalyptus plant has a strong, fresh aroma that can help stimulate the senses and clear distracting thoughts. If you ever experience running thoughts once in a while, this is a good suggestion. While running thoughts is a clinical condition that;s best helped with consulting a doctor, I find that essential oils help tremendously. When eucalyptus extract is combined with extracts from woody plants like sandalwood, the resulting blend creates a rich, aromatherapy experience. Blend 5 drops eucalyptus, 10 drops sandalwood and 2 drops lavender essential oils in your diffuser for an overall sleep-enhancing scent that transcends think to dream state.
Cedarwood and Frankincense
Cedarwood and frankincense, with their warm and woody aromas, work similarly on the mind and body. Cedarwood taps into cultural nostalgia for the slow quiet of a tree-lined path. Frankincense evokes images of spiritual ceremony that signal it’s time to rest. Cedarwood oil has a warm, woody aroma with subtle hints of citrus and spice. Frankincense, of course, is familiar to most of the Catholic faithful because it is one of the gifts of the Magi to Jesus Christ when he was born, The deep, smoky-pine fragrance of frankincense recalls these traditional settings where people gathered for quiet contemplation and prayer. Even today, the scent of frankincense evokes symbolic associations with spirituality, peacefulness and rest. When cedarwood and frankincense aromas are blended together in aromatherapy, they promote both physical relaxation and mental calming.

Used consistently, essential oils can significantly improve the quantity and quality of your sleep for a fresh start every day. With essential oils, you’re harnessing millions of years of nature’s wisdom. Give one a try tonight and let its harmony and melody carry you off to the fertile fields of sleep.
