When it comes to food, we are learning that it really make a difference when we choose the food we eat. A lot of moms are making a conscious decision to choose food that is proven to help conserve the environment and also improve the lives of farmers.
You see them now on most super markets, food labeled Organic and selling for premium prices. And mostly, if I have the budget, I wouldnt mind if what Im buying is a fair trade product that supports the producers of food.
But…
We are confused, whats this about organic versus natural? Are they one and the same? Or not? Whats the difference between organic food and natural food?
In a recent program by Wyeth Philippines, during the launch of the Promil Organic Milk, Leilani Limpin of Organic Certification Center of the Philippines brought us up to date with the organic food industry and how its growing in the Philippines.
She showed us a picture of 2 beautiful tomatoes and asked us which one is organic and which one is not. Frankly, I couldnt tell.
Natural Farming versus Organic Farming
Conventional or natural farming is the most common type of farming we have in the Philippines. Organic farming is a controlled agricultural production that relies on ecological processes rather than adding harmful input such as fertilizers (or growth promoters in animals) that usually have a long term adverse effect on the environment and amount of produce that the farmers can provide over time.
