Growing up here in Marinduque, cooking was always a family affair. Our kitchen was the heart of the home, filled with love, laughter and delicious aromas. While foods and technologies may evolve, the essence remains – nurturing our loved ones through sharing meals together.
As a mom myself now, I’ve seen changes in the nearly 20 years since I started cooking regularly. Back in 2003, we relied mainly on time-tested family recipes passed down orally. Ingredients came from our backyard garden or the local market. Technology was minimal – our trusty pressure cooker and blender were luxuries!
Fast forward to today. My kitchen reflects both tradition and modern advancements. Our neighborhood Facebook group connects us to share fresh produce, with younger families introducing new dishes. While I still use Grandma’s faded notepad of recipes, YouTube and blogs expand our palates. This blending honors progress while celebrating cultural roots.
Adaptation is key in the provincial kitchen. With limited supermarkets, I get creative with seasonal finds. Air fryers and slow cookers stretch ingredients. Community support fills gaps, like neighbors sharing eggs. Technology plugs deficiencies through online grocery shops and virtual cooking classes with city cousins.
Balancing limited resources with my family’s evolving tastes requires flexibility. Meal kits expose my kids to global flavors within our means. Garden vegetables and local proteins form healthy, affordable bases, with occasional special treats. Education, not deprivation, is my goal as fads and restrictions abound.
As for me, gadgets ease the workload somewhat but cooking remains a meditative act. Sharing meals provides livelihood for body and soul, now more than ever. Our kitchen stays the heart of this home – a place where past, present and future feed into each other, as nourished on my family’s plates as in our lives together.
Progress need not displace tradition when embraced with care, intention and community spirit. My kitchen evolves organically through this balance. May yours do the same!
